Clubs and Organisations in Market Weighton have been awarded £492,067.76 funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums from local housing developments. Three different groups are set to receive funding.
The Market Weighton School have been awarded £300,000 towards a Full Size 3G Pitch on the site. This project will benefit not only the school but the football teams in Shiptonthorpe, Goodmanham, and surrounding villages as well. This funding is part of a £1,000,000 project, with The Market Weighton School raising £100,000 themselves and £600,000 being applied for from the Football Foundation.
Market Weighton Lawn Tennis Club have been awarded £184,814.00 towards replacing their current, 30 year old club house, with a new fit for purpose building. This project is due to cost £256,944.00 with the remaining £72,130.00 being applied for from the FCC Communities Fund and donations made from Robert Massey Trust and the Sancton Wind Farm Fund, along with funding from Market Weighton LTC themselves.
Stephen Moulds, Vice Chair at Market Weighton Lawn Tennis Club, said: “Market Weighton Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1921, and for the past century the club has provided the facilities for recreational and team tennis to the town and the surrounding villages. In this special centenary year, the club is delighted to have received a Commuted Sums Open Space Grant towards the construction of a new clubhouse facility at our location on Holme Road.
“The building of a new clubhouse will help the club in achieving its objectives of promoting the participation in tennis as an inclusive sport for all age groups within the community. In these difficult times with the effects of the pandemic, it is important to encourage a healthy lifestyle and provide a social environment where emotional health benefits from friendships and a sense of belonging and commitment.
“We are grateful to receive the grant which enhances the club’s facilities and helps provide another century of tennis within the community.”
Market Weighton Town Council have been awarded £7,253.76 towards a much larger project on the Market Weighton Canal Trail. This application was for development of the upper section of the proposed Market Weighton Canal Trail (MWCT). The upper section sits within the parish boundary and runs from River Head Farm (off River Lane just inside the Market Weighton parish boundary) to Market Weighton Town Hall (the northern terminus point).
Gordon Shields, Project Coordinator, said: “This project is a significant part of a larger project linking the centre of Market Weighton to the Humber Lock and this funding is a huge contribution enabling the first phase of the project to begin. The Market Weighton Canal Trail will eventually link with the Transpennine Trail on the Southern End at the Humber. This will link the Market Weighton Canal Trail to a number of different walks around East Yorkshire, including Hudson Way and Wolds Way.”
Councillor Gary McMaster , portfolio holder for planning, infrastructure and housing, added: “The award of these Commuted Sums as a condition of their planning approval to these three groups and organisations in Market Weighton will make a real difference to them all. I wish them well for the future.
“Some of these Commuted Sums have already been provided by local housing developments and some are still to be provided, as development continues.”

Notes to Editors : Commuted Sums
Developers are required to provide Outdoor Playing Space (OPS) as part of all new residential developments above a certain size. This requirement is highlighted in the East Riding Local Plan, supported by the Supplementary Planning Document.
Outdoor Playing Space is specified as space that is available for sport, active recreation or children’s play. The space must be of a suitable size and design for its intended purpose, accessible and available to the general public.
When a developer cannot provide this within the development itself, a sum of money known as a commuted sum may be paid in lieu of this, by the developer entering into an agreement under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
The funding is provided on a phased basis as the number of new houses built increases.
Commuted Sums funding has already been received for Market Weighton LTC and Market Weighton Town Council.
Market Weighton School will be funded as and when the money is received.
